Our Story

We started dating in May of last year, and less than six months later, we decided to get married.

Although some may think we are rushing into such a big decision, we have, in fact, known each other for over 60 years.

Our story began in 1966, when we were kindergartners at St. Rita’s Catholic School in Dallas. We shared classes but little else. By sixth grade, Stephen had a crush on Marie but was too shy to talk to her.

After high school, we went our separate ways and built full, independent lives. Marie stayed in Dallas, raised a family, and built a career in accounting. Stephen built a career in IT that took him to Minnesota over 20 years.

We were both looking forward to an exciting, adventure-filled retirement as single people, but fate had other plans.

Then came May 16, 2025, our 50-year grade school reunion happy hour. What started as a casual conversation quickly became something neither of us expected. Stephen’s crush was quickly reignited. We loved each other’s sense of humor and laughter. We were drawn to each other’s intelligence, worldviews, and work ethic. Marie decided immediately that Stephen was “the one”. However, Stephen was a little hesitant to give up his happy bachelor life.

From that weekend on, we were rarely in the same place, yet somehow, we were always together. Sometimes we were 10 miles apart. Other times 6,000. But not a single day passed without seeing each other, whether in person or on a video call.

Marie knew she was in love 64 days after that reunion. Stephen, who had grown fond of his “happy bachelor life,” needed 15 additional days. When he was finally ready, he sent a text message. Marie, believing that romance should include suspense, did not text back. Instead, she mailed a postcard to tell him that she loved him too. For ten days, Stephen had no idea whether his declaration had been received or reciprocated. He refreshed his phone. He checked the mailbox. He waited. The postcard eventually arrived.

We deepened our love through trips to Austin, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Northern California, and Washington, D.C. Along the way, we introduced each other to friends and family, which we called our “interview tour.” We are proud to say we passed the gauntlets! The people who know us best were very happy that we found each other.

On January 4, 2026, we returned to the very happy hour bar where it all started, and in the same manner in which Stephen declared his love for Marie, he texted her asking her to marry him. In fear that she would text back a refusal, he got down on one knee and asked Marie to marry him. Our dear friend Lisa Peters was there as a witness and videographer and verified that Marie, in fact, said “yes”!

So on Friday, September 25th, at 5:00 pm, in front of friends and family, the people who shaped both of our lives leading up to this magic moment, we will be wed at the Cathedral of Hope, Peace Chapel in Dallas, Texas.
